In case you haven't heard, Kanye West's mother, Dr. Donda West passed away this weekend. This news hit me especially hard and to be honest I'm not sure why. I've never met Kanye personally, though I did have a very brief phone conversation with him a couple of years ago and found him to be quite nice. Interestingly enough, I was making plans to interview Dr. West about her book Raising Kanye, but hadn't gotten around to making the call. Wow. Maybe I feel so bad because in some ways I can relate to Kanye - the underdog who made it through. I admire his passion, I love the way he wears his heart on his sleeve, his complexity intrigues me. I also understand how crucial the love and support of those around you can be as you strive to live out a dream - to fulfill your purpose. Were it not for my parents unwavering support God knows where I'd be or what I'd be doing. My mother is, much like Dr. West was for Kanye, my biggest fan. Every week as I sit down to host Cocoa Mode I know that if no one else is listening she is. I can't imagine what life would be like without her. Sure, the day will come when we all have to say goodbye to this world, my mother included. But like most of us, I take it for granted that she'll be here tomorrow or even next year The truth is, only God knows.
Cocoas please take a little time out today to reach out to those people who have made a difference in your life. Even if you can't get them on the phone or they don't return your email, just say a silent prayer for their well being.
Kanye, my prayers are with you. Keep your head up and stay the course, your mother wouldn't have it any other way.
Peace,
Shawna
